Prince Edward Island Premier Dennis King announced its plan for a phased approach to reopening the provincial economy on Tuesday, April 28, which the Island’s top doctor said would be “safe and measured.”
The province’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Heather Morrison said the first phase of the four-phase approach would begin on May 1.
Morrison said the phased reopening would begin with the opening of “priority, non-urgent” healthcare services, as well as priority elective surgeries and other select healthcare services including physiotherapists, optometrists and chiropractors.
The first phase will also allow for outdoor gatherings of no more than five people from different households as well as non-contact recreational activities. There will also be select outdoor and construction services like landscaping, watershed cleanup and road construction.
Phase two is scheduled to begin on May 22 with restrictions lifted further on public gatherings. Retail businesses and child care services will be allowed to open in this phase.
There is no firm start date for the next phases in the reopening plan.
Prince Edward Island reported one new case of COVID-19 on Tuesday, bringing the total number of cases in the province to 27. This is the first case in the province since April 13.
