This is Stage 2 of the Tour de Murrieta from 2021. This is a road bike race that takes place over two days here in Southern California and is a massive race weekend including an overall Omnium (General Classification but points based).
In the crit race the day before (Stage 1) I did a ton of work and didn't quite get the finish I wanted, ended up finishing 14th and sitting 15th coming into Stage 2 the Circuit Race. The Circuit Race is a 4.2 mile course with a few big ring rollers on it. I knew I had to make up some spots to shake up the classification so I wanted to get away with a few other lower GC riders who wouldn't be marked.
We executed that plan well, however, I'm a wimp and got dropped from my break mates wheel. This ended with me soloing for about 10-15 minutes off the front in a one man break away until some other riders started to bridge. Unfortunately, by then the field was motivated enough to chase us back so I sat in, 'recovered', and saved what I could for the sprint.
I was way out of position coming into the last two corners but knew this was a race to the final corner so I lit it up as soon as possible out of the second to last corner making up a TON of places in the wind. I came into the final corner sitting 4th wheel but lost to a couple guys who were able to carry their momentum around the outside and beat me at the line.
Shout out to everyone who raced this weekend. I was able to take home an 8th place finish in the Circuit Race and 9th overall in the Omnium for a Top Ten Omnium finish on the weekend.
Thanks to the team and everyone else for supporting and showing up, doing the work to help me out.
