Hello, and welcome to Speak American English with Lyman Holton.
My name is Lyman Holton.
In this lesson, we’re going to talk about another American English phrasal verb.
Are you ready? Let’s begin.
“add up”
The phrasal verb “add up” is usually used when we talk about something that we don’t understand, because it isn’t intelligible, justifiable, or practicable. And, to explain this in simpler terms; when we use the phrasal verb “add up” we mean “make sense.” So, if we were to say that something doesn’t “add up,” saying it doesn’t make sense,” would mean exactly the same thing.
Of course, “add up” is also used when we talk about the addition of numbers. As in “Please, ADD UP these numbers for the total price of my purchases.”
Here are a few examples of how to use “ADD UP” in sentences:
I listened to your whole story. “What you’re telling me just doesn’t ADD UP!” How could you have been in Florida at 5 PM and now you’re at your home in California, and it’s only 6 PM?
“You’re plan for opening a new restaurant every two weeks, doesn’t ADD UP.” You’ll be lucky to open one every six months.
“What do you mean it doesn’t ADD UP?” With this new work schedule, we can get twice the profit with only half the employees.
Do you really think I’m stupid? If you were home by 11 o’clock last night, why weren’t you in your room at 1 o’clock when I checked on you? “Sorry, but your story doesn’t ADD UP.”
“Here, read these instructions and tell me if you think they ADD UP.” This can’t be the right set of instructions unless this table is supposed to look like a bookcase when we’re finished.
“Kelly, do you really think that ADDS UP?” These people are going to paint your whole house for $100? The paint will cost more than that!
In our next lesson, we’ll cover another American English phrasal verb.
Goodbye for now.
