In this video I'll show you how to catch the train from Yogyakarta to Surabaya in Indonesia.
It's a very relaxing journey by rail that takes approximately 5 hours. The train departs from Yogyakarta (also known as Tugu) station, which is just a few minutes away from the tourist precinct of Malioboro road.
In terms of booking tickets, there are some websites that purport to offer online sales of tickets but I found them to be unreliable. Given that the station is located in the heart of the city, it's easier (and arguably more secure) to just buy your tickets directly from the ticket counter at the station say 3-5 days before your intended departure date.
There are three classes of seating available:
Economy
Business
Executive
Executive is the most expensive and offers the most comfortable seats. Business is mid range and still comfortable, while economy has bench style seats that face each other.
Business and Executive are the most popular and sell out quickly, so it pays to plan ahead and buy your tickets in advance.
Prices range from around Rp175,000 to Rp280,000 for Executive and Business seats with prices depending on availability.
The ticket counter at the station only accepts cash so make sure you have enough Rupiah with you before making your way to the station to buy your tickets.
