We left Winnie Texas and drove only an hour away to the coast. Crossing into Louisiana. We saw gator road kill and lots of swampy farmland. Cameron is a rural out of the way place, very few residents after many hurricanes but quite a few "camps" as the locals call their weekend places. We met people who live in Lafayette and come down for the weekends.
We asked locals how long you are allowed to stay on the public beach and no one knew, but said they have seen people here for weeks. We stayed for a week, it was peaceful with hardly anyone around but the weekends were a zoo. We recommend visiting during the weekdays unless you enjoy the crowds. Everyone we met here were kind & friendly. Definitely a great place to stay for a bit.
