Conoid chair, designed and built by George Nakashima in 1969, is the one of the most renowned woodworks in 20 century with its unique design. Influenced by Shaker, his work has the beauty of simplicity with elegance.
Different from the original version, slight design changes are done in my work. The original one was designed as a dining chair and the leg angle is increased for comfortability and the head width was decreased with the personal preference. The front angle of the legs is cut with bandsaw instead of table saw and it does not reach to the foot, which might make the support sturdier. The seat is carved a little bit deeper with a more rounded shape. The spindles are made of hard maple, while hickory was used in the original. Spindles became thicker than I thought, which I don't like much after all. The combination of tung and linseed oil along with polyurethane varnish is used, when the nominal 5 times of tung oil finish is applied to the original chair.
The reference was the book by Nakashima, The Soul of a Tree, and various information on internet was helpful.
