How to Set Up Your Manual Box and Pan Folder
It takes just a few simple steps to set up your manual Box & Pan Folder for operation, yet it is often a process that is neglected. However if you want optimum bending results, less wastage, less effort and ultimately a lot less wear and tear on the machine itself, it is very good practice to take a minute or two (quite literally) to make sure everything is set up correctly.

You could just use the machine as you find it, but given the benefits mentioned above, why would you? Let’s have a look at the three simple steps to do things a lot better…

Adjusting the beam

Material thickness is important and setting your Box & Pan Folder for that job’s specific thickness is also important. Place your material, or a smaller sample on the box bed, the beam can be adjusted in and out to match your material thickness using the handles on the rear of the folder. Part of the beam can also be adjusted upwards and downwards as shown in our visual guide for different sized radii. If the beam is adjusted too tightly then there is a risk of crushing the material, instead aim for a gap around the same thickness as the material itself for optimum results.

Setting the clamping mechanism

The clamping lever is used to clamp your workpiece safely and securely in place for bending. Setting it too tight will not allow the lever to pull down and lock, set it too loosely and the workpiece won’t be locked in place sufficiently.

So how do you know when you’ve got it right? As you can see in the video we start with the locking nuts quite loose (they should ideally always be left loose for the next job), that means the lever will lock in to position but probably with very little resistance, meaning your workpiece is very lightly, if at all clamped.

Release the lever and give the bolt a turn until the point where the locking lever needs more force to lock off securely. When that happens you can be certain your workpiece is clamped safely.

Setting the counter-balance

Balancing the beam makes it easier for the bottom beam to lift and fold the material. This might take several tries to get right, moving the weight further towards the end for thicker, heavier jobs or closer to the middle for thinner materials and securing the bolts each time. Taking the time to set your counter balance though is important to work safely, with minimal operator effort, more accurate bending and ultimately a longer life for your Manual Box & Pan Folder.
