At KnobCon 2024, we saw Michael from Ashton Research, who explained how standard Ethernet cables, with their eight wires, can carry four balanced audio signals.
Ashton Research has developed small adapter boxes that connect quarter-inch jacks to RJ45 connectors, enabling users to transmit analog audio signals over commonly available Ethernet cables. Michael showed us the setup, which can have advantages over traditional DB25 or hosa snake cables, such as availability and cost-effectiveness. The system's effectiveness was highlighted by the seamless transmission of audio from a laptop through a 25-foot cable with no crosstalk. Ashton Research's initial product lineup includes different form factors and a patch bay, making the setup versatile for various studio and live environments.
