In this video we discuss how to find the number of days between 2 dates. We go through a few examples and also explain the knuckle method of finding the number of days in each month.
Transcript/notes
Lets say that it is august 24th and you want to know how many days to march 12th. The easiest way to approach this is to list the months involved in the time frame, so, August, September, October, November, December, January, February, and March. Then title a column off to the right and we will name it days.
August has 31 days and 24 days have passed, so, we will subtract 24 from 31, which equals 7. So, 7 days remain for August, and we will right that in the days column for August. Every day during the months of September, October, November, December, January, and February are included in the given time frame, so, 30 for September, 31 for October, 30 for November, 31 for December, 31 for January and 28 for February.
If you have trouble remembering how many days are in each month, the knuckle method can help. If you are looking down at your knuckles, starting with the furthest left knuckle, that will represent January, then the space between that knuckle and the next knuckle will be February. The next knuckle will be the next month of March, then the next space will be the next month of April, and so on as you see in this diagram.
Every month that lands on a knuckle has 31 days in it, and every month that lands on the space between the knuckles has 30 days in it, with the exception of February, which has 28 days in it, and 29 days in it during a leap year. And we are going to assume this time frame is during a non leap year.
Back to our problem.
For the month of March, we are till March 12th, so 12 days in March. Next we add up the days column, and we get 193 days from August 24th to March 12th.
And here are a couple more examples on the screen for you of how to find the number of days between 2 dates.
