Rolling Stone recently published an article discussing proposals from President-elect Trump's advisers and Republican lawmakers to impose stricter work requirements and spending caps on programs such as Medicaid and SNAP.
Republicans are considering increased eligibility checks for Medicaid recipients, which could result in millions of people losing their health insurance due to administrative errors.
There are also discussions about tightening work requirements for SNAP recipient. Currently, a four-person household must earn below $3,380 in gross monthly income to qualify for benefits. The Trump administration had already proposed cutting rules allowing states to raise SNAP income limits, which could make it harder for families to save money without losing access to the program.
The proposed changes to Medicaid and SNAP are seen by some critics as a way to finance tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. A review of Trump's 2024 tax proposals found that they would disproportionately benefit the richest 5% of Americans while raising taxes for everyone else.
The policy proposals, if enacted, could increase economic hardship for vulnerable groups, while also being part of a broader agenda that critics argue favors wealthier Americans.
