Lane merging or changing lanes is a required skill for the purposes of a road test.

• check the mirrors, signal, and shoulder check;

• you must have a minimum of 3 flashes on the signal before you start to move laterally;

• locate the gap into which you will move the vehicle;

• shoulder check again as you move the vehicle laterally and just before it crosses over the line into the other lane of traffic;

• accelerate slightly to maintain a constant speed and compensate for the increased distance that your vehicle is going to cover due to traveling on an angle;

• leave your signal on until the vehicle is completely in the other lane of traffic;

And if you're moving back after moving over to a create space between you and another road user or fixed object, do all the same procedures to correctly move sideways and change lanes.
