Reefing the mainsail is one of the most common tasks sailors do.
This video demonstrates what I think of as the best way of having your reefing system set up.
Huge appreciation to Phil Haydon and Lauren Zike for the use of the boat AND the shooting & editing respectively. Dr. Phil Haydon is a life time battler with Epilepsy and having taken up sailing a few years ago has embarked on a mission to expand our understanding of this condition thru sailing adventures.www.Sail4epilepsy.org
There are five basic elements to reefing.
Ease of performance-This is Coopers 5th rule of sailing, aka the dipstick rule. If it is easy to access the dipstick, you WILL check the oil.. Likewise reefing.
Ensuring the mainsail gets flat as well as smaller in area.
Ensuring you can protect against chafe on the reef lines.
Ideally the system will let you reef the mainsail in a way that exposes the operator to the least hazard, usually falling overboard, followed by getting hurt.
Watch and hopefully learn.
