After calming the storm, Jesus and his disciples make it across to the other side of the lake. Jesus is hoping for some peace and quiet. But he’s in for a noisy and dramatic welcome!

They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes. When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him. This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones. – Mark 5:1-5

This man was so demented that he would violently attack the local people and destroy their property. That’s why they’d tried to chain him up. But the evil spirits within him gave him supernatural strength, and nothing could restrain him. He lived among the tombs, because his life was basically over. He was as good as dead.

Mark points out that this demon-possessed man would scream and cut himself with sharp stones day and night. Today, we call this “self-harm.” The truth is that when we sin, the people we harm the most, one way or another, is always ourselves. Think about sin in your life and how it is harming you. And now, imagine that Jesus has just landed on the shore of your life, and he is right in front of you. What would you say to him?
