On Friday 4th April 2014, the Llangollen Railway held their annual Spring Steam Gala. The railway had opted to stage their gala around a theme of Croes Newydd, a Welsh locomotive shed closed long ago.

The railway were operating 4 locomotives (2 home-fleet, and 2 visiting locomotives) on 2 passenger sets, the Suburban set and a very short freight.

Home fleet locomotives were:

- GWR Collett 2884 Class 2-8-0 no. 3802 (carrying BR Black livery)
- BR Standard Class 4 2-6-4T no. 80072 (carrying no. 80096, a locomotive which used to be based at Croes Newydd)

Visiting locomotives were:

- BR (WR) 1600 Class 0-6-0PT no. 1638 (courtesy of the Kent and East Sussex Railway)
- GWR 4300 Class 2-6-0 no. 5322 (courtesy of Didcot Railway Centre)
