A short video of the day I got promoted to blue belt in jiujitsu (bjj). This blue belt promotion was very unexpected and surprising which made it so much better.

As mentioned in the title, this is a surprise blue belt promotion, this belt promotion occurred on July 18 2022, one day after my jiu jitsu competition in no gi. Backstory: A teammate forgot his blue belt at home so he took one from the "extra belts" pile. This happened to be the same belt that was going to be used by my instructors to promote me. We also don't give out stripes at our gym (at least not in adult bjj classes). They decided to line up stripes on the wall and pretend they will start giving out belt stripes. This was new and surprising, and was the way of covering up the belt promotion. They called up Scott, a friend who was borrowing the belt at the time. They knew that it wasn't his belt, but it was their way of getting it off subtly for the promotion. The rest is caught on video as shown here. I am mainly uploading this as a way to remember the day I got promoted, and to reflect on it as I progress further in my Brazilian jiu jitsu journey. If you are new to jiujitsu and want to see what a belt promotion is like, this is a good reference point. Some bjj academies do a belt gauntlet, but ours does not. So this is purely what a belt promotion ceremony looks like in a gi bjj school.
