The Fernandina Island Tortoise has been presumed extinct since 1906. In 2019, a female of this Galapagos tortoise species was found by Forrest Galante. She has been named Fernanda and since she is the most critically endangered animal on earth, she has been take to the Galapagos National Park Tortoise Center. According to Forrest Galante, evidence has been found of at least 2-3 other specimens on Fernandina Island in the Galapagos and active efforts are taking place to find them and bring them to the center in order to begin a captive breeding program and save the tortoise from actual extinction. When she was found, Fernanda was malnourished and due to volcanic activity, limited to a small patch of vegetation. Since being in captivity she has put on lots of weight and is healthy, although her growth is stunted. This Fernandina Island Tortoise is the rarest animal on the planet and its future extinction status is dependent on finding others.
