Are Irish families called clans?
Yes. The term Clan, or "clann", is actually Gaelic; meaning ‘family’ and originated in Ireland. However, Irish kinship-based organizations were usually called ‘septs’ from the Irish 'sliocht' ("line").
Do the Irish have clan tartans?
Did these Irish clans have tartans historically? Not really, though several do now. As in Scotland, the idea of a "clan tartan" came much much later in the 19th or even 20th century. Initially it was Scots-Irish families from the north who adopted family tartans. Nowadays, there are several tartans named for Irish Septs, but these are not as popular as the County tartans.
How do I find my Irish tartan?
Genealogy is the best thing to explore for a thorough answer. This is how you'll discover if there is a Sept/family tartan associated with your ancestors. However, the far more popular approach, due to the complexity of Irish genealogy and history, is to wear a County Tartan.
Can I wear both an Irish family tartan and a County tartan?
Of course! The Irish County Tartans are considered Universals - anyone may wear one. So if you have an Irish family tartan, but it is not being woven, you can opt for the County tartan of your choice. Similarly, if you have both Scottish and Irish ancestry, there is no rule saying you can't enjoy using both tartans.
There are also several Universal Irish Tartans to enjoy including...
