A Drink and a Cigar—The Story of Murray Hall
A bouncing, bagpipe ballad about Murray Hall and masculinity in the late 19th century
Written, directed, & performed by Kian J. Johnson
Murray’s story was told by everyone but him, and he wanted it that way to protect his identity. We don’t have hardly a word of primary source for Murray Hall; when he was discussed after death, what was most talked about was how hard he was to spot because he got angry, smoked and drank. I want to popularize his story now that we can talk about gender and its complexity.
