Rochester Public Utilities stack four, 299’ chimney removal is now complete.
Built in 1968, stack four consisted of two concentric chimneys; an inner cylindrical lining made of acid-proof brick which carried the flue gas, and an outer concrete column that provided support and protection from temperature changes and the elements. The chimney was in use for the majority of its 52-year life until it was shut down on September 24, 2013 for the last time.
This seven-week demolition project was documented with Afidus timelapse cameras and drone footage from the beginning. Starting on April 24th, the Vic’s 300 ton Manitowoc Crane was assembled on-site for two days before chipping away on the chimney using a Brokk 500 hydraulic excavator with demolition attachment remotely operated from the ground.

In total, the Time Lapse crew used six Afidus time lapse cameras throughout this project to document it from the various angles adding interest and breaks. Footage captured from the DJI Mavic Pro 2 drone is always a bonus.
Nerdy Good Stuff: Afidus cameras output .mp4 video files. This eases post-production time without the need for stitching individual .jpg frames in post production.
