Tudjman hears troops plea as Serbs prepare for war
US Assistant Secretary of State Richard Holbrooke arrived in
Zagreb on Monday (6/3) to try to persuade President Franjo Tudjman
to reverse his decision not to extend the mandate for UN
peacekeepers in Croatia. In January, Tudjman told the
international community that some 12,000 UN soldiers would have to
withdraw from the rebel Serb-held Krajina region from March and by
June 30. Croatia wants the UN forces replaced by an international
task force deployed along internationally-recognised borders with
Serbia and Serb-held Bosnia, and not along truce lines inside the
country. Soon after arrival, Holbrooke - accompanied by the US
ambassador to Zagreb, Peter Galbraith - went into talks with
Tudjman. No statement was released after the initial, brief
meeting. A second meeting was scheduled for later on Monday. As
the discussions in Zagreb continue, the regional situation grows
more tense. With the serious possibility of the UN pecekeepers
leaving Croatia, the self-proclaimed Republic of Srpska Krajina is
preparing for war in Croatia. Meanwhile, the European Union on
Monday delayed the opening of trade talks with Croatia, hoping to
pressure President Tudjman into changing his mind about expelling
the UN peacekeepers.
