Makeup of 8" yellow box FPI pipe joint as part of DNV practical exam, ISO 14692 (2017) & ISO 3650 & ISO 17024
When we did the first exam for Aramco, the request was from Vicenzo (CSD Aramco) that we do not only the "silly" assembly of small pieces (about 1 meter long and 4" diameter) and then install a complete line. Vicenzo was requesting a makeup of a joint of a full-length pipe.
A full-length pipe you can not handle with some handpower alone you need a crane or similar/ A forklift truck in this movie with moving also in the axial direction which made in this case assembly more easy. A full-length pipe weighs over 200 kg. When not handled with care you will destroy the threads, alignment is very important as you can have cross-thread in that case it is over. The bottom line it is a completely different discipline.
We, Vicenzo (Aramco) + Alwin Fahrer FPI, and I, decided that we will use two lengths of pipe and make it up to hand tight we do not use a so-called dope=TF15 otherwise you can not untwist the pipe after full makeup. So to handtight and no dope which makes the samples multi-reusable. We have made with these pipes over 100 !! make-ups. With dope, we would have lost 100 pipes (which is of course not economical).
During the exam we have a group of around 5 to 6 people of which one is appointed "boss" he has to give all instructions for the make-up of the joint and take care of the alignment. The joint is then made up of the last 5 threads. Untwist and then next candidate. So everybody is one one-time boss. Sometimes the candidate has to redo the whole makeup again.
Further, I set the pipe under quite a slope, otherwise, the alignment is to easy, flat floor everything fits but does not match with reality.
Experienced candidates with work and no experience with this GRP material, really like it: "It is like working in a trench".

This video gives an impression of how an examination is performed according to the DNV examination scheme for bonders, jointers, spoolbuilders, or pipefitters. Assembly of the joints is checked against the manufacturer's procedures during the exam. This has to be done correctly. The joint will be tested at 2,5 times the design pressure for 1 hour no leaks allowed in the joint.
GRP Pipe systems specialists
The quality and thus reliability of GRP (Glass-fibre Reinforced Plastic ) pipe systems are based on their design, production, assembly, and maintenance. Therefore, end users, manufacturers, contractors, consultancies, and other organizations need to ensure the relevant competencies of personnel during all stages, especially related to connecting all pipes and other parts into one big GRP pipe system.
DNV has, in close cooperation with renowned stakeholders, set competence profiles for professionals working on GRP pipe systems. The certification of the professional competence requirements follows ISO 14692 (2017) & ISO 3650 & ISO 17024, as determined by the DNV Committee and incorporated in the end terms. The DNV Certification Committee for GRP accommodates the major global end users, manufacturers, contractors, and consultants for GRP pipes in developing and maintaining globally acceptable personnel competence standards and pragmatic but strict certification rules for the currently established competence profiles for field specialists in GRP pipe systems
