Professor Anne Pauwels' Inaugural Lecture at SOAS, University of London
Being bilingual is seen as desirable, even necessary, in this increasingly 'borderless' world. But bilingualism and language learning are complex, highly politicised topics for many communities and nations. Who benefits from bilingualism? What kind of bilingualism is valued? In this lecture Professor Pauwels will explore these issues, paying special attention to the role of universities in the debate.
Anne Pauwels is Professor of Sociolinguistics and Dean of Languages and Cultures at SOAS. She obtained her PhD in Linguistics from Monash University, Australia and has worked at several Australian universities as Professor of Linguistics and as Dean of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Her main areas of research expertise deal with the sociolinguistic aspects of language with particular attention to multilingual and transnational settings and with the relationship between gender and language.
