Nick Mothershaw talks about the evolution of identity from paper documents to digital identities, to the inclusion of biometrics and social identities.
Identity used to be paper documents, that was how you proved who you were to organisations.
In the last 20 years proving your identity has evolved from paper documents to using electronic information to verify identity. Paper documents are no longer the only way to prove your identity.
The next step for identity is digital identity. Digital identities are a highly-trusted identity established with a provider, like Experian, which people can use with other organisations to prove who they are.
Digital identities are still largely using passwords for security, this is problematic as passwords can easily be forgotten.
The natural progression of this is a move to biometrics. Biometrics is something you are; your voice, your face, your fingerprints.
But why is it so important to identity individuals? It is important so organisations can avoid fraud. They need to know who they are dealing with, and that they are a genuine individual. Identity theft is a growing problem. So a business needs to have confidence in who they do business with.
Social identities play a part in digital identities. Social IDs already exist, what is missing is a level of trust in digital identities. As they evolve social identities could play a part in adding the trust that is currently missing.
