These days, many people feel overwhelmed by life’s trials and tribulations: family problems or relationship difficulties, loss of loved ones, loss of material possessions, financial difficulties, conflicts at work and other personal issues... No one is immune. While these situations can bring people great inner distress, Ustadh Tayeb explains how we should approach life’s hardships in the light of the Qur’an and the teachings of the Messenger of Allah صلّى اللّه عليه و سلّم.
In the Qu’ran, Allah سُبْحانَهُ وتَعالىٰ often emphasizes the concept of patience and trust in Him during times of hardship. One of the verses that reflects this idea is in Surah Al-Baqarah:
[Verse 216]“But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah knows, while you know not.”
[Verse 155-157] “And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, who, when disaster strikes them, say, ‘Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.’ Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided.”
These verses teaches that what may seem unfavorable to us may actually contain goodness that we cannot perceive, and it emphasizes the importance of trusting Allah’s wisdom and plan.
