Anti-Submarine Rockets

The RBU-6000 is a 213 mm antisubmarine rocket launcher which is used in almost all warships of Indian Navy. It consists of a horseshoe-shaped arrangement of twelve launch barrels, that are remotely directed by a fire control system that uses the input from SONAR systems.

The RBU-6000 uses the RGB-60 rocket powered depth charge. This is a lightweight unguided depth charge with impact fuse and 25 kg high explosive warhead. Upon explosion nearby depth charges are triggered, adding to the concussive effect. The more recent RPK-8 upgrade uses a smart 90R self-guiding depth charge with shaped charge warhead capable of penetrating double hull submarines. Unlike the RBU-6000 the RPK-8 can also be used in a torpedo defense role.

The RGB-60 is an unguided rocket which uses a solid propellant engine. The Rocket carries a 23 kg warhead, has a maximum range of up to 5,500m, destroys targets at a depth of 10-500m. The rockets can be fired in salvos of 1, 2, 4, 8 or 12 rounds at a rate of 2.4 rockets per second. It is reloaded automatically with individual rounds being fed into the launcher by a loading system from a below deck magazine. Typical magazine capacity is either 72 or 96 rounds per launcher. It can also be used for shore bombardment. The RBU-6000 system is considered the last shield of a warship against enemy submarines.

Extended Range Anti-Submarine Rocket

In order to boost the Indian Navy’s fire power, two labs of DRDO – ARDE & HEMRL has developed an advance version of anti-submarine rocket which is called Extended Range Anti-Submarine Rocket (ER-ASR). The rocket has been designed to replace the existing Russian-origin Rocket Guided Bombs (RGBs).

The new rocket has a range of 8900m meters which is vast improvement over existing RGB-60 rockets. The enhanced range is achieved by the used of new & improved propulsion system.

It is a 212mm single stage fin stabilized solid propellant powered rocket. It has length of 1850mm, mass of 113.5kg. The rocket can be fired in two modes which is called Ballistic1 & Ballistic2. Ballistic1 is short range firing where the rocket can achieve range more than 3km and Ballistic 2 is long range firing where rocket can achieve range of more than 8km. The rocket has a flight time of 27s in Ballistic1 mode and 45s in Ballistic 2 mode. The new ER_ASR can carry 25KG of warhead at depth of 500 meters. It can be launched from existing RBU-6000 launchers, integrated in almost all the warships of Indian Navy.

Development Status

The ER-ASR was successfully test-fired for the first time from Navy’s INS Chennai on 3rd April 2023. During the maiden tests conducted the performance of the rocket system was evaluated at short range as well as long range.
