(24 Mar 2022) Members of the youth division of Ukraine's most successful football team arrived on a train with other refugees at the Hungarian border on Wednesday.
The 12 to 17-year-old Shakhtar Donetsk footballers had been evacuated from the club's academy and were accompanied by three female members of the administration staff.
Their parents of the players — 37 boys and five girls — are believed to still be in Ukraine.
After leaving the train at Zahony station, aid organizations provided the players with food and drink while they waited for five colleagues who didn't have proper travel documentation.
After seven hours, the group were able to continue their journey by bus to Split in Croatia, where one of Shakhtar's greatest players has organized an integration program for the youngsters.
The second most-capped player in Croatian history, Darijo Srna made over 300 appearances in a Shakhtar side that won the Ukrainian Premier League ten times, and lifted the UEFA Cup.
He is now director of football at the team, which was forced to leave its home in 2014 due to unrest in the Donbas region and relocate to the west, finally ending up in Kyiv.
