Southern Railway West Country Class 4-6-2 Pacific Steam Locomotive 34046 "Braunton" heads north along the West Coast Main Line through Bamfurlong on Wednesday 26th May 2021. The steam loco was working Statesman Rail's "Fellsman" railtour from Crewe to Carlisle over the Settle & Carlisle railway. The train was running along the slow lines, past the site of the long-gone Bamfurlong station in order to allow an express to pass, said express overtook the tour with moments to spare with the back of it clearing a mere 7 seconds before the steamer came into view.
Braunton named after a Devon village, given works number 21C146 was built at Brighton Works in November 1946, it spent time based at Exmouth Junction, Salisbury, Brighton and Bournemouth sheds. With the formation of British Railways the loco was numbered 34046 in 1949. In 1959 Braunton was rebuilt and would later that year haul the Royal Train, it was withdrawn in 1965 and sold for scrap at the Woodham Brothers scrapyard in Barry Island. After languishing in the scrap yard for 23 years the loco was moved to Brighton in 1988, in 1996 restoration began with the locomotive returning to steam in 2007 after 42 years.
The official working was;
1Z31 Crewe - Carlisle
