Hi I’m Vivien Williams with a Mayo Clinic News Network Headline.
E-cigarettes. The number of middle and high school kids using them has tripled in one year. That’s the most recent news from the CDC - the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It’s obviously not good news says Mayo Clinic addiction specialist Dr. Jon Ebbert.
“There is an increasing body of literature talking about the risks associated with e-cigarettes. And it’s not just delivery of formaldehyde. It’s also related to some of the flavoring agents that are in the liquid or e-juice that electronic cigarettes use to deliver the nicotine. A lot of these additives or flavoring agents could potentially cause cancer.”
Plus, Dr. Ebbert says e-cigarettes have the potential to lead to the use of regular cigarettes, which are clearly bad for you and can cause cancer, heart disease and death. He recommends everyone should avoid the use of traditional and e-cigarettes.
“I think we need to be very clear as clinicians that these e-cigarettes have an unknown safety profile. They’re not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. They’re not regulated by good manufacturing practices.”
And they are not more effective at helping you stop smoking than the medications doctors currently use.
And that’s today’s Mayo Clinic News Network Headline, I’m Vivien Williams
