The EU Emissions Trading Scheme is currently in turmoil, as carbon prices continue to fluctuate due to oversupply in the market. A vote by the European Parliament's ITRE Committee to reject the European Commission's plan to bloster the market sent prices tumbling below €3/tonne in January but ENVI, the lead Parliament Committee voted on Tuesday, 19 January 2013, to support the European Commission's plan to backload allowances. Nevertheless, prices fell by 20% following the vote, given persistant doubts that that enough political will exists to rescue the ailing market.
