Edelmann op.1 sonata no.6
ca.1760 Strassbourg Spinet (anon.)
ca.1780 Schiffmann Square Piano (Brauneberg)
Both restored by Pooya Radbon
The second half of the 18th century witnessed the greatest variety of keyboard instruments co-existing together before (around 1800) the fortepiano became the main keyboard (and around 1870 the modern piano brought the keyboard to one single model and it was accepted not to count any other type of piano!).
Makers like Ferrini, Stein, Hellen, Merlin and others made fortepianos with either an extra manual for the harpsichord or having the option of either piano or harpsichord.
The idea of using two instruments together is nothing but the same idea of the old days to benefit from both sound colors in musical dialoge.
