Guitar Tone Tuesday Ep: 169- George’s Vintage Gibsons 1/3 - Is This Robert Johnson's Guitar?
On today’s episode we visit with George who is a fantastic force in the Ontario, Canada music scene. George has come across some amazing Gibson guitars in his time, so we shot 3 videos with him featuring some of his choice vintage examples.
This video features a very special 1926 Gibson L1 flat top that bares an incredible resemblance to the famous Robert Johnson guitar. The back story to this instrument is absolutely fascinating. It is a gift that keeps on giving, and Lucas was
extremely lucky to be given the gift of being 1 of 50 musicians on George's "One Guitar One Hundred Hands" series. The series features
some of Canada's best blues and singer songwriter guitarists playing this amazing instrument.

Now, a little history on the L1: The L1 was initially introduced as an arch top, but this 2nd generation flat top version was available from
1926 until 1937. The very rare catalogue guitar features a spruce top, likely mahogany back and sides with ivoroid binding, as well as a
honduran mahogany neck with ebony fretboard. Back in 1926 you could pick one of these up for $50, roughly almost $850 today. The guitar's lower bout is 13.5 inches, the scale length is roughly 25 inches, and the nut width is wide, almost like a nylon string guitar.
