A common complaint in the Latino entertainment community is that there are no Latino filmmakers and/or stories out there. There are only stereotypical representations of Latinos done by white filmmakers. Common Sense Mamita Lydia Nicole has an honest conversation with indie filmmaker Kenneth Castillo and actress Karla Ojeda about the real problem with Latinos and Hollywood: Latinos are out there working, but Latinos do not want to support other Latino's work. Why Latinos don't want to support other Latinos is a complex issue with multiple different reasons: differing cultures divide Latino groups, jealousy on who is getting work, and sometimes it is just big egos getting in the way.
Kenneth Castillo has created 7 independent films with well rounded Latino characters. However, because his stories center around the urban Latino film genre, other Latino artists have said blatantly that they will not support his work because they assume his work is full of Latino stereotypes. Karla Ojeda, his wife, has helped him produce and has acted in some of his projects, talks about Latinos not giving Kenneth's stories a chance and the stereotyped roles she was cast for in other Hollywood films.
Common Sense Mamita Lydia Nicole sends out a call to action for any Latinos watching to support any Latino artist putting in the hard work to create and share Latino stories. It is not about being friends with someone or being from the same background, but about championing the good work that does come out of the Latino entertainment community and is not being recognized and appreciated. Good work will be rewarded!
