today we’re combining, not 2, but 3 samplers that couldn’t be any more different from each other, but that also have one thing in common: a great lo-fi sound.
the Korg Volca Sample has a 31.25 kHZ, 16 bit mono sampling engine, it offers a polyphony of 10 notes, parameter lock, a really cheap sounding reverb (in a good way), and great analog filters.
the Teenage Engineering po-33ko! works at 8-bit and 23.5kHz, has transient detection and auto slicing, works amazing with drum breaks.
the Sonicware Liven Lo-fi12 nailed that nostalgic sound with that 16-bit of depth and a sampling frequency of either 12 or 24 Khz. Also, it’s got a 4 second memory PER sound, and there are 8 banks of 16 sounds each, so 128 total, quite a lot. also a lot of FX, resampling, but most importantly, a 27 keys keyboard that allows you to play melody, bass lines or even chords, quite easily. And speaking of chords, this thing has 10 voices of polyphony and 4 tracks so not bad!
in this video we're gonna learn how to synchronise them + the best possible audio routing.
sometimes, when I’m online and looking to buy YET another sampler in order to feed my Gear Acquisition Syndrome, and also fill that existential void in my soul, I hear a voice in my head that says… dude. another sampler? why not a synth or, I don’t know, something that makes sounds on its own?
and to its credit, that voice has a point. if you’re spending money on a dawless setup, or just a collection of instruments, it’s probably not a bad idea to add some variety to your collection. but me personally? I have a computer with literally all the plugins in the world, which I’ve explored to not even a 10% of their potential. no. when I go dawless I like using samplers because they let you build on top of the sound design you already performed when making the samples on your computer. they add their own sound, their own effects, their own personality. dare I say… they add that extra umami flavour. thats it.
