Statement of the International Organisation of Eliminating all Forms of Racial Discrimination and Geneva International Centre for Justice

Thank you, Mr Vice-President,

Since its adoption in 2001, the Durban Declaration and Program of Action has been a significant document, yet its implementation has not matched its potential impact. In recent years, people of African descent have continued to experience heightened forms of racism and racial discrimination, often as a result of stricter migration laws and increased law enforcement that disproportionately targets them.

It has been 23 years since the implementation of the DDPA, and while some States have made progress, more is needed. Colonial systems and outdated practices persist despite the ever-evolving world. With the emergence of new opportunities and threats posed by digital technologies, it is crucial to ensure that we do not perpetuate existing issues. Therefore, a human-rights-based approach is essential in addressing digital human rights to prevent the continued marginalisation of people of African descent.

Hence, EAFORD and Geneva International Centre for Justice urge all States to fully implement the DDPA across society, including in education, politics, law enforcement, and other areas. This will guarantee the realisation of human rights and the well-being of all individuals, especially those of African descent. It is crucial that States make concrete efforts to disrupt the persistent and continuous cycle of discrimination and unequal opportunities based on race and religion.
