Bodycam footage released on Thursday showed U.K. police officers being pelted with fireworks, as riots erupted across the U.K. last weekend. A series of violent demonstrations have spread across the country after three young girls were killed in a knife attack in Southport, triggering a wave of disinformation online that wrongly identified the suspected killer as an Islamist migrant.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Friday that police officers must remain on "high alert" for further unrest, as the U.K. braces for more possible riots across the weekend. “I am absolutely convinced that having the police officers in place these last few days in the right places, the swift justice that's being dispensed now have had a real impact,” Starmer said.
In Belfast, demonstrators gathered outside the city hall to counter an anti-immigration protest and show their solidarity with migrants.
“When I arrived here, I was very happy and peaceful. But right now, everything has changed. We are immigrants, but we are human beings, we just need peace. We are not terrorists,” Belfast resident Sonia Rama said, who came from Eritrea and grew up in Ethiopia. “Please save us, protect us, we don't want to die.”
