I followed in the steps of Polynesians to New Zealand, Fiji, and Hawaii. Now, I finally made it to Easter Island, the Southeast corner of the Polynesian Triangle and the most remote island in the world.
I couldn't believe how advanced Polynesian culture flourished on the island to build these enormous statues. But it seems like the Polynesian people disappeared overnight with their work unfinished. Even though the island is spectacularly beautiful, the primary feeling I had was shock and sadness at the remnants of a collapsed civilization.
Standing on that land, I felt like I was looking back hundreds of years at a well-preserved memory. Easter Island is a miniature model of our planet. If we don't protect nature now, one day people will stand on our land and have the same feeling of loss.
