"탈북자 1명 美 입국…2006년 이후 총 204명"
Newly released figures show two-hundred-four North Korean defectors have entered the United States as refugees since 2006.
Citing the State Department, U.S. broadcaster Voice of America reports that the latest defector arrived in the U.S. on Thursday,... a woman in her 30s who has settled in Illinois.
The data shows twelve North Korean defectors have started new lives in the U.S. this year.
North Koreans can be granted refugee status under the U.S. North Korean Human Rights Act.
As well as receiving some financial support from the U.S. government,... defectors are also given free health insurance and food vouchers for the first eight months.
They can apply for permanent residency after a year and receive citizenship after five years.
