Stainless steel pleated filter cartridges are made of wire mesh and/ or sintered metal fiber felt. These filter cartridges always need inner support tube (perforated metal tube or wire tube) to give the filter strength and keep the shape.
This short video will show the pleats before assembled with the inner tube, which can be soft and easily be moved. This is a simple indication of why the stainless steel pleated filters need the inner support. Similar reason regarding the outer protection, however, outer protection is often used for avoiding explosion when backwashing under pressure.
