I had a wonderful conversation with Professor Scott Aaronson, a brilliant computer scientist who specializes in computational complexity theory and quantum computing. Professor Aaronson and I discussed the biggest practical and theoretical challenges that need to be solved before we see widespread useful quantum computers, the significance of quantum supremacy, the nature of intelligence and creativity, Grover's algorithm, the nature of reality and its relation to quantum mechanics, computation, information, and consciousness, whether consciousness can be fully explained computationally, Roger Penrose's theory that consciousness could be linked with quantum effects, whether understanding quantum computation could offer insights into the computational limits or possibilities of biological systems, including the brain, the role of computation in our understanding of the universe, whether the universe itself is fundamentally computational, what the term 'computationally hard' tells us about the limits of human knowledge or the structure of reality itself, whether some problems are 'hard' to solve, whether the randomness of quantum phenomena suggests that there are limits to how much of the universe we can compute or predict, whether the future of linear algebra is random, given the rapidly growing area of randomized linear algebra, what the concept of 'information' means in a philosophical sense, especially in quantum mechanics, and whether quantum mechanics suggests a more fundamental understanding of what information is.
