Having a budget you understand and consistently use is crucial to taking charge of your finances. Mint by Intuit is one the top budgeting apps around and is completely free to use. But is this a case where you get what you pay for or is it worth the download? Let's take a look!
Pros
• Easy to see an overview of all your finances in one place
o Credit Score through TransUnion
o Can see investments
o All debts
o Can track value of property through the app
• Free to use
• Connected with all Intuit accounts so you can even see the status of your tax refund if you use TurboTax
• Notifications for upcoming bills
Cons
• Ads within the app, option to upgrade for no ads
• With prepopulated budgeting categories, it's not easy to set up my budget how I want it
• Budget is only reflective of the current calendar month, so if you have a bank account that pays you a day or two early, it will show that income as part of your budget for the previous month
• No joint accounts
• Some connectivity issues with synced accounts
The Verdict
I think it's worth the download. It is free and the overview of your finances is really nice to have as a snapshot of what's going on. I didn't like how the budgeting features of the app are set up, but whether you use Mint to budget is going to come down to personal preferences more than anything else. It's certainly useable, just not my cup of tea.
