Catherine Opie is an American fine arts photographer whose work explores the relationship between mainstream and marginalized societies, with an emphasis on sexual identity and how individuals inhabit their environments. Her portraiture, studio, and landscape photography has been exhibited extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan, including a midcareer survey at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York in 2008. In 2017, a large survey of Opie’s work opened at the Henie Onstad Kunstsenter in Norway. Recently, Opie debuted her first film, The Modernist, at Regen Projects in Los Angeles; it will be shown at Lehmann Maupin in New York in November 2018.
Recipient of The Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art Medal in 2016, the Julius Shulman Excellence in Photography Award in 2013, and a United States Artists Fellowship in 2006, Opie was born in Sandusky, Ohio, and holds an MFA from California Institute of the Arts. She lives and works in Los Angeles and is a professor of photography at UCLA.
