In Nazi-occupied Greece, as anti-Jewish persecution threatened the very existence of Greek Jewry, the fate of the Mordechai family from the small village of Veria hung in the balance. Remarkably, during the darkest of times the human spirit prevailed. Several local non-Jewish families risked their own lives to save the members of the Mordechai family, providing false identity papers and keeping them alive in various hiding places until the end of the war. Among the rescuers was Melpomeni Dina who was recognized by Yad Vashem as Righteous Among the Nations in 1994. Nearly 75 years after the end of World War II, Melpomeni met with two of the Holocaust survivors whose lives she helped save at a reunion event hosted by the Jewish Foundation for the Righteous (JFR) and Yad Vashem.
