STORYLINE:
Spectators spilled out of Beijing's National Stadium on Sunday night after the spectacular closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games, many waving toy Olympic torches which were part of a gift pack given to everyone who attended the ceremony.
Tourists and Chinese alike were full of praise for the way the Chinese had staged the 2008 Olympic Games.
"Unreal! Congratulations to Beijing for a fantastic Olympic Games," said Jackie Lauff, an Australian who had travelled to China for the Games.
"Our dreams of a hundred years have been fulfilled," said Chinese spectator Wang Tianjun.
But although the sixteen day long event has officially come to an end, for some the legacy will live on.
"The Olympics is over but the Olympic spirit is still here. Beijing is more beautiful; people like to exercise more. I think it is indeed a very successful Olympics," said Chinese spectator Lu Nan.
The Olympic Games ended with as much style as it began.
A superstar-studded closing ceremony capped a 16-day pageant of state-of-the-art logistics and astounding athletic feats.
Tenor Placido Domingo was on hand, joining a Chinese soprano in a lyrical duet. Soccer icon David Beckham and Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page were there, helping London take the reins as host-to-be of the 2012 games.
