Is Africa bracing for more coups?
Following the overthrow of President Ali Bongo Ondimba of Gabon by the country’s military on Tuesday, two of the country’s neighbors have taken steps to protect themselves from facing a similar fate.
Both the presidents of Cameroon and Rwanda have made major changes to their national armies, purging hundreds of officers, generals, and other soldiers from their ranks.
The military purges are taking place amid a wave of coups which have hit Africa since the Covid-19 pandemic. Since 2020, 18 coup attempts have been made on the continent, with nearly half being successful.
Will there be more this year? Stay tuned.
