(4 Nov 2021) Vietnamese authorities said on Thursday that they were in contact with Iranian authorities to resolve the seizure of a Vietnamese oil tanker and to ensure the wellbeing of the crew.
Pham Thu Hang, a spokesperson for the foreign ministry, said their diplomatic offices were working with Iranian authorities to address the issue.
Hang said the captain of the seized MV Southys vessel told the Vietnamese embassy in Iran on 27 October, three days after the seizure, that all 26 crew members were being treated well and were in normal health.
According to two U.S officials, Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard troops took control of the MV Southys on 24 October at gunpoint.
Analysts believe the vessel was trying to transfer Iranian crude oil to Asia, in defiance of sanctions.
U.S. forces had monitored the seizure, but ultimately didn't take action as the vessel sailed into Iranian waters.
It's the latest provocation in Mideast waters as tensions escalate between Iran and the United States over Tehran's nuclear program.
