Six-month sleep regression—what it is, the signs, and how you can help your baby through it.
🔹 What is a Sleep Regression?
Sleep regression can happen at any age and is often tied to growth and distraction. For our little ones, this means physical growth like teething, or neurological advancements like new motor skills, which can disrupt their ability to settle into sleep.
🔹 Signs of a Sleep Regression:
Increased Night Wakings: Your baby, who previously slept well, might start waking up frequently at night.
Early Morning Wake-ups: Your baby may start waking up around 5 AM.
Shorter Naps: Instead of longer, restful naps, your baby might only nap for about 45 minutes.
Bedtime Resistance: Difficulty falling asleep at bedtime, though this is less common.
🔹 Main Causes of Six-Month Sleep Regression:
Teething: Teething can begin at various ages, causing discomfort that disrupts sleep.
Motor Leaps: Around this age, babies start rolling, which can wake them up and make it hard for them to fall back asleep.
🔹 How to Help Your Baby:
Pain Management: Consult your pediatrician about pain relief options for teething.
Comforting Techniques: Try to distract your baby from the discomfort with gentle patting or other comforting methods.
Practice Rolling: Give your baby plenty of tummy time during the day to practice rolling.
Sleep Timing: Ensure your baby isn't overtired by sticking to appropriate wake windows—about 2 hours and 15 minutes before the first nap and up to 2.5 hours between subsequent naps and bedtime.
