Jupiter Artland’s 2012 Permanent commission, Coppice Room by Andy Goldsworthy.
British sculptor, photographer and environmentalist, Andy Goldsworthy creates site-specific sculpture and land art set in natural and rural settings. His art involves natural and found objects to create ephemeral and permanent sculptures that reflect the character of their environment, such as snow, ice, wood, leaves, sand, mud and twigs.
Stone Coppice is living, growing, changing sculpture in which people and wood play equally important roles. Provoked by the cop of trees at Bonnington, Goldsworthy rebuilt a derelict building and “placed trunks floor to ceiling within it inside so that, as you go in, you feel as though you are entering not just a dense wood but a tree itself”. The relationship between stone and tree will become stronger both physically and visually through time as the trunks grow around the stones. Ultimately the work is an expression of the strength and power of trees.
