STORYLINE:
France and Germany began celebrations on Wednesday to mark 40 years of reconciliation between the two once-bitter enemies that focused on playing a key role together in the building of Europe.
German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder met French President Jacques Chirac at Paris' presidential Elysee Palace.
The two leaders presided over a joint Cabinet meeting of ministers from both countries, including French Prime Minister Jean Pierre Raffarin and German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer.
A raft of events planned for the day were to focus on the theme of two European giants looking to reinvigorate their pivotal relationship.
In recent months, France and Germany have worked together to ensure a stronger say in shaping the European Union's future as it accepts 10 new members in 2004.
The two governments are expected to announce an agreement allowing French and German ministers to attend each other's Cabinet meetings.
The commemorations celebrate the 1963 signing of the Elysee friendship treaty, signed by former French President Charles de Gaulle and German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer.
Later on Wednesday, the French and German parliaments will meet in an extraordinary joint session at the Chateau de Versailles outside Paris.
