The Little Red Lighthouse relic of the 19th century, beacon to New York City's past, and probably the most delightful of all the largely ignored (by the general public) NYC landmarks, even though it's the star of its own book. Seen here in what used to be called Jeffrey's Hook, now considered an extension of Fort Washington park, in the year 2008 under patrol watch and flanked by muddy construction under the George Washington Bridge.
Part of the reason the lighthouse is so unseen is because only the runners and bikers who know of these paths tend to traverse them. Not many are willing to cross the Henry Hudson Parkway to reach this small stretch of parkland. At 40 feet high and in such proximity to the great bridge above, the lighthouse doesn't really stand out, being on one of the lowest points in Washington Heights. But once found, it does tend to inspire a little bit of childish awe in a person, especially if you've lived in the area your whole life.
