Ansonborough is defined as the several city blocks situated between King and East Bay Street, and George and Pinckney Streets. It is located just North of the historic market and Customs House. The neighborhood was conceived in 1696 as the first suburb of the original walled city of Charles Towne.
In 1959 the Historic Charleston Foundation began a rehabilitation program because the Ansonborough neighborhood had fallen into poor condition. The foundation acquired and restored over 100 homes and became a national example of outstanding rehabilitation. Since then Ansonborough has become one of the most sought after addresses on the Charleston Peninsula. The unique mix of urban pied-a-terres and large single family homes in this desirable area allows for diverse living quarters in the heart of the city while maintaining a distinctly residential feel.
